Nimrod Long was born Sept. 13, 1921 in Rome,
Ga., moving to Birmingham, Ala., as an infant. He attended
Birmingham public schools from 1927-38 before enrolling
as a senior at Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn., where
he graduated in 1939. He then attended Virginia Military
Institute from 1939 to 1941 and Alabama Polytechnic Institute
(now Auburn University) in 1941-42.
Mr. Long entered the U.S. Army Air Corps
Aviation Cadet Program in the spring of 1942 and earned
his pilots wings and officers commission at
Moore Field in Texas. He later served as a fighter pilot
with the 74th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group of
the 14th Air Force in China in 1944-45.
Following his distinguished military service,
Mr. Long returned to Auburn in 1945-46 and earned his
bachelors degree in August of 1946.
Mr. Long began his illustrious career in
October of 1946 with the TCI Division of U.S. Steel as
junior engineer. He was employed later that year as sales
engineer for Warren Brothers Roads Co. and was promoted
to district manager in 1956.
He later served from 1962-67 as division
president for Warren Brothers Roads Co., a division of
Warren Brothers Co., Ashland-Warren, later known as APAC-Alabama.
From 1962-67, he was division president for Alabama-Mississippi.
Mr. Long retired in 1986 as division president
of APAC-Alabama. He is a past president of Alabama Road
Builders Association and Alabama Asphalt Pavement Association
He was married to Joan Conzelman in 1946
and they are the parents of two children, Joann and Nimrod.
